Technology › Rotary Instruments
Small metal instruments called files made of a unique alloy of nickel-titanium (NiTi) are used for the cleaning and shaping of the root canals. NiTi is extremely flexible and is five times more flexible than stainless steel and appears to be 10 times more resistant to stress.
These are used with a motor which makes the process of cleaning and shaping more efficient and helps in better disinfection of the root canals. The rotary technique is less fatiguing and it decreases postoperative pain for the patient. They are used with torque-control electric engines which, when the file is stressed beyond a certain preset limit will automatically reverse, thus precluding further stressing the file.
