Endodontics › Endodontic retreatment

Sometimes the root canal treatment may fail due to various reasons such as:

  • Missed, calcified or curved canals not treated the first time
  • Leakage from the filling on the crown
  • New decay
  • Inadequate filling or filling not placed in time following procedure

Again the treatment options here would be to either consider extraction or to redo the root canal treatment. Retreatment would involve removal of all the old filling and the root filling, to adequately clean the root canals and any missed ones and then refill the root canal(s). A new filling or crown must be placed on the tooth as soon as possible to prevent any further contamination of the root canals.
